This month's theme is all about Finding Our Voice.

How and when we communicate affects our well-being and our ability to create an impact. Whether we’re expressing our needs in the form of a boundary, or handling an interruption at work, our communication is often a pathway to our goals.

In the United States, the dominant culture emphasizes individualism and prioritizes near-team results. This can lead to the belief that louder is better, and assertiveness is key. Yet we know that that's not the case for everyone, as I discuss further over on the blog

In a recent Two Piers workshop for women in construction, I polled attendees on their greatest communication strength. Even within our tightly-knit group, we had quite an array of answers.

That means that each person may have a different way that their β€œvoice” shows up most effectively.

When looking at how to effectively communicate, we always advise 3 steps:
  1. Understand the broader context
  2. Understand the personal dynamics at play
  3. Choose a style and medium based on your strengths
Being heard is a two-part equation, and while we cannot control how others receive us, we can maximize our likelihood of success by communicating in a way that feels genuine and considers our specific context and goals. 🎯
National Hispanic and Latine Heritage Month
We're halfway through this month-long celebration of Hispanic and Latine Heritage. In last month's newsletter, we explored the origin of the month and significance of its dates. Additionally, we explained the difference in meaning between the terms Hispanic and Latino. You might also be wondering about the terms Latinx and Latine, (which we've used here). The folks at Dictionary.com do a terrific job of explaining the usage and some of the considerations around the different terminology. For some incredible works of literature celebrating Hispanic and Latine culture, check out our reading list below ⬇️

Bi-Awareness Week
Last week we celebrated Bi-Week! πŸ’™πŸ’œπŸ’— This weeklong recognition culminated with Celebrate Bisexuality+ Day on September 23. Unfortunately, there is still a great deal of misunderstanding and stigma facing bisexual and pansexual individuals, both within the LGBTQ+ community as well as in broader society. While the concept of bisexuality has been around since the 1800s, in many regards, progress and acceptance have been slower than for lesbian and gay rights as a whole. Bisexual adults are significantly less likely to feel comfortable β€œcoming out.” They are also statistically more likely to have experienced assault, intimate partner violence and mental health challenges than their straight, lesbian and gay counterparts. Yet there is evidence that bisexual and pansexual individuals actually make up a slight majority of the LGBTQ+ community. So, we feel it's important to continue confronting bi-erasure and working toward greater visibility and acceptance of the Bi+ community.

Coming Up in October
  • National Hispanic and Latine Heritage Month continues
  • ADHD Acceptance Month
  • National Disability Employment Awareness Month
  • LGBTQ+ History Month and National Coming Out Day (NCOD)
  • Black History Month for our friends in the UK
Book List
This month's booklist is packed with great reads related to our themes. Here is a sample of what we've been reading.
Please note that we typically link to a Bookshop.org affiliate page as opposed to Amazon because we prefer to support independent bookshops. Should you choose to purchase a book from one of our links or lists, your purchase also helps support Two Piers. Rest assured that you do not incur any additional fees and we only share books that align with our mission.

Articles
Several recent articles have explored how the push to return to the office has impacted experiences of racism and ableism in the workplace. They also explore the resulting correlation between β€œReturn to Office” initiatives and employee attrition rates.
What are you seeing in your workplace? Have you embraced flexible working or are you all-in on the office?
